This post shows you 10 easy ways to make your small living room cozy for fall.

Fall is the season I wait for every year — the yellow and orange leaves outside, that warm, slow feeling that comes with it.

So I always like to have that same feeling inside my home too.

I started small — a warmer throw, softer lighting, one candle burning most evenings.

None of it takes a full redecorate.

Here are 10 small ways to bring that feeling into a small apartment living room, one change at a time.

Rust or cocoa throw blanket

Most of the year I keep a lighter throw out, but once fall hits, it’s the first thing I swap.

Rust or cocoa just feels right for the season.

I drape it over one arm instead of folding it — makes it look like something I actually use, not just something sitting there.

I keep a basket by the coffee table just for this — pumpkins piled in loose, never lined up.

The throw goes over one side instead of folded flat, and I always go with mixed sizes over matching ones.

One leafy stem tucked in somewhere finishes it off.

Pillow covers in knit or corduroy

Same pillow inserts, new covers — takes maybe twenty minutes, cheapest change on this whole list.

I go with corduroy on one and a chunky knit on the other instead of matching them.

Rust, olive, and cream are the three I keep coming back to every year — usually one solid, one textured, never two of the same.

Once it’s dark by six, overhead light alone makes the room feel flat.

I drape string lights loosely around the mirror instead of wrapping it neat — a few strands hanging lower than others, nothing symmetrical.

Warm-white only, always. I tried the cool blue ones once and pulled them down within a week.

A woven rug under the coffee table

A full rug under the whole seating area feels like a big commitment in a rental.

A smaller one layered just under the coffee table gets the same warmth without touching the rest of the room.

I go a little darker for fall — reads warmer under lamp light than a light neutral.

Warm bulbs and a few flameless candles

White overhead light works fine in summer, but it feels off once the season shifts.

Warm bulbs change the whole tone for under ten dollars.

I add a candle or two on the coffee table too — usually one’s going most evenings while I’m on the couch, whether I need the extra light or not.

Dried branches in a tall vase

Fresh flowers wilt in a week, which adds up fast if you’re replacing them every weekend.

Dried stems cost once and hold their shape through the whole season.

Pampas grass works too if branches feel too bare on their own.

I always tuck one real fall leaf in with the dried ones — found it outside, not bought.

A blanket ladder with layered throws

The ladder fixes a real problem — blankets that don’t have a home end up in a pile on the couch arm or stuffed in a basket that won’t close.

I hang two or three at different lengths instead of stacking them even.

The bottom rung usually holds whatever I actually grab most, not the nicest-looking one.

Mini pumpkins and books on a shelf

Straight rows of books can feel more like storage than decor.

I stack a few flat instead of upright, then set two or three mini pumpkins right on top instead of beside them.

Five minutes, easy to undo later.

I switch which books go on top depending on the color of their spines, not what I’m actually reading.

A small potted mum for color

Most fall decor is fake — pumpkins, garlands, sprigs, all plastic boxed up by December.

A real mum is the one thing in the room that’s actually alive, and it holds color for weeks with just regular watering.

I’ve killed two so far — still worth it for the ones that made it.

None of this needs to happen all at once.

Pick the one that feels most doable this weekend, and the rest can wait.

Fall doesn’t last that long anyway — might as well let the room feel like it while it does.
